 Marcel Broodthaers

b 1924 in Brussels (B)—died 1976 in Cologne (D). Broodthaers, originally a poet, was the first artist who committed his work to the exploration of the art context. In 1969, he opened his own private museum in his apartment in Brussels, displaying objects that were entirely made out of nailed boxes. The semantics and syntax of language and image are explored in a new systematic context. Departing from Magritte's heritage analytically, Broodthaers goes beyond that by incorporating new artistic means such as photography and film. He was also influenced by the aesthetics of Rimbaud and Mallarmés who tried to make every day life into a poetic experience.
