Wolf Kahlen
«Mirror TV»
Work with the ‘TV box’ as an object – a constant factor in Kahlen’s output – evokes associations with Beuys’ ‘Felt TV’ or Vostell’s ‘Concrete TV’. Common to all these works have is a confrontation between the material and immaterial electronic picture. Kahlen’s masking of the TV screen through a reflective surface is a direct criticism of the medium, of its superficiality and its narcissism. Self-observation/the state of being observed are all-pervasive themes in the context of performance and closed-circuit installations.
