«Three Linked Cubes/Interior Design for Space Showing Videos»

Three Linked Cubes - a series of rectangular bays with one side open and with side panels of altering two-way mirror or transparent glass - has a dual indentity.Placed outside, it is an opened pavillon illuminatedby the sun; placed indoors, it is transformed into Interior Design for Space Showing Videos. Here, various video monitors and speakers are placed to allow three seperate programs for audiences subdivided into six groups. The effects of the changing illumination from the video images reflected on the class panels affect the mirror «ghosts» of audience members seen in other enclosed bays on the divider. The work is both the video images and the spectators' reaction to the video-viewing process in the social space of the video exhibition situation.

«I think museums are great places. I realized that a museum could be a social space and I fell in love with the empty lobbies, the gift shop, coffee shop, areas where people could relax. Si I did work like ‹Three Linked Cubes/Interior Design for Space Showing Videos›, 1986, where teenagers could lie on the floor. I think what I did was to discover the tradition of the museum instead of pursuing the stupid idea of Institutional Critique.»
