Klaus Gasteier
«SMiLE. Dumb Angel»
Klaus Gasteier's interactive «SMiLE» works with the enigma of the feverishly awaited Beach Boys album, from 1967, of the same name. Like the hit single, Good Vibrations, preceding it, this title as well was supposedly composed of individually recorded song fragments that first came together after being mixed in an certain order. Although the album was not released for almost 40 years, the modulated song parts were found in a bootleg version through unexplainable channels.
Gasteier allows the listener to control the ordering of the fragments using a graphic interface. Using icons, one can chose the next musical fragment to be attached, change the level of the material (and select, for example, from the thematic, mood or tone-related choices of other groups of fragments) or even modify the attributes databank of more than a hundred music particles, and program the whole on a play-it-yourself basis. The recipient navigates through a multidimensional, hypertext-based music structure.
