Christoph Schlingensief
«Please love Austria!»
For his action piece «Please Love Austria!» Christoph Schlingensief adapted the mass media format of the Big Brother TV-project. During the festival Wiener Festwochen 2000, he staged a fitting media experience: a TED-generated vote for the viewers, pending the expulsion of 12 asylum seekers, and broadcast directly from five containers erected on the square, Herbert von Karajan Platz, in Vienna. Contestants could win either starting capital for a secure existence in Austria made possible through marriage, or a return ticket to their native country. Since the entire extravaganza was registered in advance with Haider’s right-wing party, Freiheitlicher Partei Österreichs (FPÖ), Schlingensief could count on sufficient mass media coverage.
