 Etiennes Jules Marey
«Photo gun»

In 1882, Etienne Jules Marey invented an apparatus—the so-called photo-gun—with which an object could be photographed 12 times in a single second. This chrono-photography was another basic element of cinema. The photo-gun operated with an electric battery, carried by an assistant. The camera could transport a 20-meter-long strip of 35mm film.
