«Newspaper Photos»

Between 1981 and 1991, Thomas Ruff compiled circa 2,500 newspaper photos from German newspapers, focussing on images from every knowledge sector. From this archive the artist selected 400 images, reproduced without their two-column-wide explanatory captions underneath. In this way he decontextualizes the images and asks to what extent images, as information media, can only operate in a specific archival matrix.
