«Ghost Train»
This montage of documentary and staged film footage depicts ‘realpolitik' as a farewell to left-wing utopias. In the prologue a ballad singer invites visitors to a fair to take a trip on the ghost train. A lightning journey through the political landscape of Germany ensues. We see election campaigning, anti-atomic power demonstrations, politicians from the Green party in the European parliament, backroom discussions and the inaugural meeting of the Öko Bank. This trip on the ‘ghost train' enquires into the Left's attitude to power and, at a time when it is threatened with extinction, argues the case for non-parliamentary politics. The hybrid form of the video reflects the political culture it criticizes, which is no longer able to distinguish between fiction and fact, fantasy and reality.
