«Cyber Tattoo»

'Cyber Tattoo' is a digital tatoo studio in the Internet. It offers construction plans, knowledge, and support. The user can acquire the machine parts from specialized dealers and construct his own tatooing machine ('Parlour Maid'). This is strapped to any body part and connected to the computer; as soon as he has logged into the net by modem, he can tatoo the desired motif directly into his skin via data transfer. The selection of motifs includes the logo of the web browser Netscape Navigator, which immediately turns out to be a seafarer motif. 'Cyber Tattoo' functions as a digital harbor in which the Internet surfer can eternalize the signs, symbols, and metaphors found in the net as souvenirs on his own body. 'Cyber Tattoo' won first prize in the 'Extension' competition of the Hamburger Kunsthalle (Hamburg Art Hall) in 1997.
