«Chance 2000»

Experimental film-maker and theatre director Christoph Schlingensief came up with a new campaign for the 1998 general election: 'Elect yourself!' He worked with the Berliner Volkbühne to produce effective public events like the 'Circus Sperlich' or a temporary 'Hotel' with daily actions involving handicapped, unemployed and homeless people. These underwent a change of role, due to skilful use of the elections laws, and collected signatures and drew up Federal and regional lists for the party. 'Art' became 'serious', and the 'Chance 2000' party soon found itself on all ballot papers. Anyone who stood could now make the motto true and elect himself in the general election.
