Gusztáv Hámos
«1989 – The Revolution on Television - The Real Power of TV»
After the Gulf War the slogan 'media war' became prevalent. To what extent this was already the case during the radical changes the East-Bloc countries went through after the fall of the Berlin Wall is made clear in this look back at events in Germany, Romania, Hungary and other countries after 1989. The occupation of Romanian television by revolutionaries, the distribution of news about opening the borders in Hungary, Czechoslovakia and finally in Germany, and the practically live broadcasting of the demolition of the Berlin Wall were media events that not only documented the process of revolution, but encouraged it as well. By contrasting images of his grandmother in Budapest's daily life with the historical events being described, Gustáv Hámos adds a personal dimension to this archive collage and essayistic reflection on the power of television.
