Walter Benjamin
* 1892 in Berlin; studies in Philosophy, German Literature and Art History in Freiburg, Berlin, Munich and 1919 PhD in Bern. 1923 begins his habilitation project at the University of Frankfurt/Main and first contact with the Frankfurt Institut für Sozialforschung and Theodor W. Adorno. 1925 officially rejected habilitation, in 1928 published under the title «Ursprung des deutschen Trauerspiels.» 1936 seminal essay «Das Kunstwerk im Zeitalter seiner technischen Reproduzierbarkeit» (The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproducibility) published in the «Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung.» After that stay in Paris and work on his unpublished manuscript «Passagen-Werk.» 1940 flight in order to emigrate to the USA before the arrival of the Nationalsocialists in Paris; commits suicide at the border between France and Spain in Port Bou.
