 Caravaggio

born 1573 in Caravaggio near Milan (I) - died 1610 in Porto Ercole near Civitavecchia (I); Michelangelo Merisi, called Caravaggio, began his artistic career as a painter of genre scenes and still-lives. At the end of the 16th century he created his first figurative paintings which soon began to grow to monumental size. Caravaggio's bold realism became soon notorious. His expressed use of chiaro-scuro became his characteristic feature which was the basis for his reputation in Rome around 1600. His temper, though, brought him into legal trouble and urged him on various occasions to flee when faced with prosecution.
